【A secret model answer】IELTS task1 line graph : by IELTS-samurai

It is a secret model answer!

I have studied in an IELTS center in a NES country from January 2019 to April 2019. During this time, I got many model answers. I will be posting edited versions of these model answers over time. The purpose so to share this information that helped me and can hopefully help others. I am also providing ways to improve these model answers.

A secret model answer (line graph)

 Question

The line graph below indicates the number of fossil remains found at an archaeological site between 1986 and 1992. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features of the information in the graph, and make comparisons where relevant.

 A secret model answer

The line graph indicates how many fossil remains were found by archaeologists at a certain site between 1986 and 1992.

Sixteen mandibles were found in 1986. This number increased significantly to 31 in 1988 and then to 32 in 1990, before declining sharply to 16 again in 1992. The number of tusks that were found fell sharply from 37 in 1986 to 24 in 1988, before rising very slightly to 25 in 1990 and declining a little to 22 in 1992. Eleven skulls were discovered in 1986. This number rose to 14 in 1988, reached 18 in 1990, and then declined sharply to 7 in 1992. The number of scapulae found at the site rose significantly from 6 in 1986 to 19 in 1988, before falling to 9 in 1990. The same number were found in 1992.

Overall, tusks were the most numerous fossil remains discovered, while scapulae were the least common.

We can rephrase the first sentence of the years which is given in the question.

When you see some line graphs, there should be a period of the time. You can say, from 1986 to 1992, however, you should say, a period of 6 years from 1986 to 1992. This small technique will give a good impression to IELTS examiners.

We should say if figures in the graph have increased or decreased over the course of time displayed.

Look at this example line graph, below.

It is clear that blue line (AAA) increased over this period. On the other hand, the red line (BBB) decreased by 2 from 1986 to 1992. See the example below on how to condense the information in the paragraph:

Example
Overall, the number of AAA increased, while BBB decreased.

This is a good example but may be too simple. Keep reading for tips on how to improve and expand your answer.

Use adverbs as much as you can.

Be sure to use appropriate adverbs for different situations.

・Significantly - for large increases or decreases

・Moderately - for medium increases or decreases

・Slightly - for small increases or decreases

Use not only adverbs, but also adjectives.

We, candidates, must show our English skills, which means, we should include a variety of grammatical techniques. For example, we can say the figure increased significantly, after that it decreased dramatically. But, this sentence uses the same grammatical method. Instead of it, we can say there is a significant increase, after that it decreased dramatically.

Improved model answer.

The line graph shows how many fossil remains were found by archaeologists at a certain site a period of 6 years from 1986 to 1992. Overall, the number of tusks and skulls discovered decreased, while mandibles and scapulae increased the amount that were found as a whole.

Tusks remained ahead of the other materials in the beginning and the end of the year. The number of tusks that were found fell sharply from 37 in 1986 to 24 in 1988, before rising very slightly to 25 in 1990 and declining a little to 22 in 1992. Sixteen mandibles were found in 1986. This number increased significantly to 31 in 1988 and then to 32 in 1990, before declining sharply to 16 again in 1992. Eleven skulls were discovered sharply in 1986. This number rose to 14 in 1988, it reached 18 in 1990, and then declined sharply to 7 in 1992. The number of scapulae found at the site rose significantly from 6 in 1986 to 19 in 1988, before falling to 9 in 1990. The same numbers were found in 1992.

 Additional information

In the first sentence of the second paragraph, I mentioned the trend of the graph. We have to analize the data, so we should compare each line and mention the trend.

That’s all! These answers do not guarantee the band 9.0. Thank you for reading.
